ImPACT Concussion Testing

Head injuries and the active lifestyle…

We all know injuries are part of sports.  Torn ACLs, sprained ankles, sore backs…and head injuries. Head injuries are prevalent in most sports and activities we participate in today, and awareness of them is on the rise. The variability and potentially limiting nature of these head injuries are more apparent now than ever before, and we feel every person should have access to the best tools for care if or when a head injury or concussion occurs.

Why is this important?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that between 4 to 5 million concussions occur every year, with increases emerging among student athletes. Concussions are in fact, the most common injury in sports:

  • Concussions can occur in any sport or physical activity.
  • Roughly 10% of all student athletes in contact sports suffer a concussion.
  • Recovery may take days or weeks, with individuals often experiencing dizziness, headaches, double vision, memory problems, irritability and depression.
  • Premature return to play following a concussion can lead to potentially serious consequences.

Most sports, teams, coaches, and organizations are beginning to take a more proactive approach to concussions, and we can help…

ImPACT Testing at Viverant

As part of our innovative approach to care and our desire to help families and athletes understand and navigate concussion-related issues, Viverant now offers ImPACT testing (, the ONLY FDA-cleared concussion evaluation and management tool available today. ImPACT is an invaluable tool to help those who may or have suffered a concussion receive the proper care they need to manage their recovery and prevent long-term complications as a result of a concussion.

What is ImPACT?

ImPACT is a 25-minute, computerized neurocognitive test available at Viverant for ages 12 and up. ImPACT is scientifically validated to measure the effects of concussion by setting pre-concussion baseline scores for analysis and monitoring if or when a concussion occurs. After an individual or athlete receives a baseline test, his or her data is stored on a secure, HIPAA-compliant location. If a concussion occurs or is suspected, that same test is administered again to compare against the baseline score. This comparison helps identify and manage the recovery period for an athlete to safely return to play.

ImPACT is helpful in answering difficult questions about a child’s readiness to return to school or an athlete’s readiness to return to play, protecting them from the consequences of returning too soon. ImPACT measures subtle changes in cognitive functioning that cannot be accurately measured. Children may have difficulty communicating symptoms, or intentionally hide them so they can continue to play. ImPACT provides our clinicians invaluable information to help take the guesswork out of concussion management and promote safe return-to-play decisions for athletes and return-to-school decisions for students.

We will work hand-in-hand with you, your physician, coaches, athletic trainers, teachers and others as directed to make sure you receive the best possible care and outcome for your child or athlete.
