Mindful Eating Improves Digestion

mindful eatingMindful eating has many health benefits, one of which includes improved digestion. The initial phase of digestion is called the cephalic phase. This stage occurs before we even start to eat. It involves the brain seeing, smelling and anticipating food. The brain sends signals to the stomach to prepare for a meal by initiating hormonal signals and digestive activities. Pancreatic enzymes and stomach acids are released and salivation is activated. All of these components are important for food breakdown and nutrient absorption. Digestion continues with a series of hormonal signals between the stomach and the nervous system. For most people it takes 20 minutes for those signals to register the feeling of fullness to the brain. This means that eating too quickly can result in at least 20 minutes of over-eating. Eating quickly and eating while distracted (such as eating while driving, working or watching TV) can cause our brains to completely overlook the fullness signals that it receives from our stomach. It is estimated that as much as 30- 40% of the total digestive response to any meal is due to that first cephalic phase which makes mindful eating an effective weight loss tool. It creates self-awareness and it pulls our attention into the present moment to notice what is going on with all of our senses.mindful eating If we are not paying attention to food before we begin to eat, if we are not fully aware of what and when we are eating, then we are missing a significant portion of the digestion response. Practice mindful eating for a more fulfilling experience with your food. You may also like- Mindful Eating
